The 1980 competition marked the birth of what more closely resembles World's Strongest Man. This would be the first competition to feature Geoff Capes.

Here continued the Capes/Kaz rivalry that began in 1980.

1982
If there are 2 things that people remember about 1982's Worlds Strongest Man competition, they are Geoff Cape's strong showing against the mighty and seemingly unbeatable Bill Kazmaier, who would have a history making competition himself, and the strange methods of young Canadian competitor Magee. |
1983
With the legendary Bill Kazmaier gone, it is time to crown a new champion. Will the favorite, Geoff Capes, manage to finally come out on top, or will one of the other competitors like the mighty Simon Wolfse win? This competition is also important for another reason; the Icelandic legend Jon Pall Sigmarsson makes his first ever appearance.
1984
After the explosive debut of the promising Icelander, the 1984 competition begins. Geoff Capes tries to defend his title against a very impressive field of athletes. |
1985
The 1985 competition would be one of the toughest for all of the competitors, and inevitably became a battle of wills between Geoff and Jon Pall, with no clear winner in sight.
1986
The Viking would seek to prove himself against Geoff in this tough competition, which it soon became clear was a two horse race. This would also be the first appearance of the favorite Ilkka Nummisto, one of the oldest competitors in WSM who was unfortunately commonly plagued by injury.
1988
1988 would be the return of Bill Kazmaier to the World's Strongest Man competition. But the question is raised: can Bill come back after so long and hope to best the dominant Icelander?n
1989
The 1989 competition would serve as the final competition of the legendary champion Bill Kazmaier. But in addition to this, this competition would be a great one for some of the other competitors often overshadowed by the big 3, like Ab Wolders and Jamie Reeves.
